The new roof of the bus station in Winterthur fits perfectly into Tuchschmid’s reference list of complex bus stations. The geometry of the “mushroom” creates the most complicated of elements and with its cantilevers, the largest being 34 m, is also a structural masterpiece.
Leading from the Mobility Centre at the foot of the roof, steel beams branch out radially in all directions, forming a hat-shaped, asymmetric structure with an overall roof area of 1’500 m2. The steel and glass structure also includes a perforated metal soffit. The extremely tight time window, from planning through to installation and commissioning within a year, is in addition to project’s geometry and location is a special challenge.
